Cross-party parliamentary group endorses Mindfulness

October 2015 saw the launch of the Mindful Nation report, the result of a year-long cross-party government inquiry into the potential benefits of Mindfulness across 4 key areas: Health, education, the workplace and the criminal justice system.  The report notes the impressive range of evidence in favour of Mindfulness and states that “…it has the potential to help many people to better health and flourishing”. Key recommendations include:

  • A substantial increase in NHS commissioning of MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) for people who suffer from recurrent depression, especially if they are living with a long-term physical health condition
  • Additional funding for Mindfulness teacher training and for research into Mindfulness Based Interventions for IBS, cancer and chronic pain
  • Implementation of Mindfulness projects in schools to support emotional wellbeing and effective learning
  • Helping employers to promote Mindfulness in the workplace, as a way of managing stress, improving mental health and increasing creativity and productivity
  • Introducing Mindfulness into prisons to tackle the high rate of recurrent depression amongst inmates
