What is the project?
Oasis Talking Therapies worked in partnership with various BAME-led partner organisations in 2019 to develop an accredited training courses for ‘Wellbeing Ambassadors’ in the BAME community.
There are currently 13 volunteers who have completed the training course, becoming course facilitators in their own communities. It’s huge success has mean there is a huge demand for the training to continue for a wider range of age groups.
The aim of the project:
Once accredited, the Wellbeing Ambassadors deliver facilitated low-level mental health groups within their communities in a language and environment that is trusted and familiar. This goes some some way to tackling mental health and wellbeing needs early in there presentation, right at the heart of the community.
We aim to bring our communities closer together, going beyond making a service ‘accessible for all’, together we are addressing barriers such as stigma, language and accessibility of mainstream services.
We know there is a major shortage of BAME therapists in the UK, we hope this course will give an introduction for younger people wanting to progress a career in talking therapies.
What does the training cover:
The training enables the individual to learn facilitator skills enabling them to deliver and support people within their community in a range of issues such as sleep, relaxation, bereavement and living with long-term health conditions.
How do I become a Wellbeing Ambassador for my community?
