Counselling is a one-to-one therapy that offers you a chance to change how you feel and improve your life. It provides a regular time for you to talk about your difficulties, grief, low mood or depression, in a safe and confidential space.
You may come to counselling because of difficult experiences you’ve been going through, such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement or redundancy. Or you may want help dealing with feelings of depression, anxiety or low self-worth that don’t seem to be connected to a particular event. Counselling can also help you overcome specific problems, such as easing coronavirus anxiety, abuse, bullying, post-traumatic stress or an eating disorder.
How it works
Expressing your thoughts and feelings to someone who is trained to listen well can itself provide a great deal of relief. You may also reach a new understanding of the causes of your unhappiness. Although counsellors don’t usually offer advice, they can help you develop coping strategies, improve relationships and make changes in how you live your life.
You will have anything from 1- 48 sessions. Many people have 6-12 sessions. You decide this with your counsellor by reviewing the therapy as you progress.
Counselling can stir up painful memories and emotions so you may go through a period of feeling worse before you feel better. Even though there can be no guarantees, in our experience most people find they get what they were hoping for from counselling. It helps to process challenging life circumstances. For some people, it is life-changing.
In the person-centred approach, you’re in a relationship with a counsellor in which you can freely express yourself without being judged. This can help you deal with negative feelings and experiences that may have caused problems. It can also help you develop new ways of living your life and relating to others. Person-centred counsellors believe in your potential to make changes that will help you lead a more fulfilling life.
