Older adults counselling
At Oasis–Talk we have recently started a new project offering free counselling for older people living in Bristol. We have partnered with the Carers Support Centre and Bristol Ageing Better to improve the mental health of local older people.
One in five older people are affected by depression, and this number doubles among older people living with a long-term health condition such as diabetes or arthritis. Research studies have shown that older people who access psychological therapies are not only more likely to complete their treatment but have higher rates of recovery from depression. Despite this, the take up of counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy is much lower for older people compared to those of working age.
This new counselling project, which is funded by Bristol Ageing Better, will provide up to six sessions of free face-to-face counselling from the The Greenway Centre Southmead, Knowle West Media Centre and Central Bristol. In addition, Carers Support Centre can also provide telephone counselling for older people who care for a friend or relative and may benefit from a friendly ear. All counsellors are experienced and qualified. These free counselling services are open to anyone aged 50+ living in Bristol (local authority).
If you wish to take part in the project or would like to find out more please contact Zuleika Gregory on 0117 927 7577 (please mention the Over Fifties Project) or email firstname.lastname@example.org
